Masterpiece Crate 7: Daft Punk - Discovery 25th Anniversary

Daft Punk - Discovery 25th Anniversary Analysis and Review

Daft Punk - Discovery 25th Anniversary Analysis and Review

Kicking off the next deep dive article in my Masterpiece Crate series is an electronic album that is beloved to me. It had to be my very first electronic CD I told my dad to get me. It's artwork (look at it!) and sound were incredible and mesmerizing to me and they dared to be the epitome of what our world would be transitioning into for the 21st century, but all the way back in 2001, which is shocking that it seems so long ago! Its synth-laden computer gloss shined outward and into mine and generations of young millennials' minds in a way that no other music had done before. It was a gift to grace our ears then and is still treasured to this day, a bonafide masterpiece of electronic robot rock, Discovery by Daft Punk.

Flying Lotus and Essay 4: Following on the heels of his sci-fi horror film, Ash, FlyLo drops his latest EP, BIG MOMMA, and unexpectedly becomes the center of the question that's on everyone's minds - What is AI's place in human creativity?

Flying Lotus - BIG MOMMA Review, and Thoughts on AI and Creativity

Flying Lotus BIG MOMMA EP on Bandcamp

This Essay Comes First

Before I can even begin to review Steve Ellison's new music, we have to get a very important topic out of the way. Unfortunately, Ellison decided to become the subject and the question on everyone's minds: Now that AI is traveling at lightning speed, what is its place in our world, human creativity, and integrity? This is a question that needs to be discussed at this point in our collective consciousness. AI is taking over, fooling almost everyone, making all of us give a universal sigh at its ability to fake what many of us might have thought to be genuine, authentic, human moments. This is quite literally the matrix being created before our eyes.

Gorillaz are back and as fresh as ever, with their brand new album The Mountain, and their short film, The Mountain, The Moon Cave, and The Sad God

Gorillaz - The Mountain Review

Another year, another new album by the well-oiled and shapeshifting music machine, Gorillaz! The love child of multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and vocalist Damon Albarn and visual artist Jamie Hewlett, who draws and animates all four virtual band members, Gorillaz has had an illustrious and successful career in their nearly 30 years of music making, which is full of standout guest features and a colorful carousel of genres. Having recruited a third permanent member, producer and percussionist Remi Kabaka Jr, who has also been the voice of band member Russel, this trio has been knocking it out of the park ever since their 2017 album, my personal favorite, Humanz, and again with their follow up, 2018's The Now Now, which I wrote about at the time. Nearly a decade and several stacked albums later, Gorillaz are back with The Mountain, full of deep themes, a short film, an art book, and more musical styles to share.

Puscifer release their best album yet, Normal Isn't, projecting anxiety, anger, and protest into one of the most explosive albums of this past year

Puscifer - Normal Isn't Review

Puscifer - Normal Isn't Review on AirdriftSignals Music Magazine

Puscifer were never ones to shy away from the news of the world. On the contrary, Puscifer always seemed like a direct response to whatever snapshot our society is in. Given all that has gone down in this historic year of societal collapse, mass deportations mirroring one of the worst times in modern history, social media as a disease, and the conspiracy-theorists' validation of a global elite's satanic trafficking ring, Isn't It Now sounds like a scream into the void for the sins that are beyond unforgiveable, and what all of us have to grapple with in this life and the next.

Why Smiley Smile by The Beach Boys is simply a different kind of record than all the rest

The Beach Boys - Smiley Smile

What is it that makes Smiley Smile such an enduring cult classic of an album?

Enough has been said about its recording style, being a product of the fallout of SMiLE, how the band went further inward and sidestepped expectations, but I believe its secret is something a little more subtle.

My Tribute to Brian

I was in the midst of this album collage project with help from The Beach Boys fan community on Reddit when the sad news of Brian Wilson’s passing rocked the world on June 11, 2025, 9 days before his 83rd birthday. As fans, we all knew this day was approaching since the news of his dementia and being assigned a conservator. I had a very hard time dealing with his death that day.

Roger Waters, former frontman of Pink Floyd, releases his own version of the classic album, The Dark Side of The Moon Redux, for better or worse

Roger Waters - The Dark Side of The Moon Redux Analysis and Review

Roger Waters - The Dark Side of The Moon Redux Comparison and Review

Introduction

For the past 50 years we've been graced with one of the most defining albums of all time. One would think that any attempt to "redo" or remake an album of this magnitude, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of The Moon, which we reviewed a few weeks ago, would be a foolish task, but the world's been shown that there are creative ways to honor and cover the original material. Back in 2003, reggae collective Easy Star All-Stars released their marijuana smoke-infused Dub Side of The Moon, and then in 2010, Dubber Side of The Moon. The Flaming Lips did their own take with Stardeath and White Dwarfs, giving their remake the same name to a more mixed reception. Overall it shows the appreciation and influence these talented artists have felt from the 1973 masterpiece so much so that paying tribute is mostly a badge of honor.

Animal Collective's second album in a year and a half, Isn't It Now?, proves the group is in top neopsychedelic form

Animal Collective - Isn't It Now? Review

Animal Collective - Isn’t It Now? Album Review

Animal Collective, a band formed from a small group of childhood friends, are a class all their own. Whether you love them or hate them, there can be no in between. This is how deeply committed they are to their songs. From their rather small and humble beginnings making music from their debut Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, the playful melodies were always there, either prominent or buried under their experimental avant-garde well of sounds.

Masterpiece Crate 5: Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of The Moon

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary Analysis and Review

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of The Moon 50th Anniversary Analysis and Review

Update: our review of Roger Waters’ The Dark Side of The Moon Redux is now live for those who want a comparison review of this classic album.

Time keeps on changing, but what is timeless remains the true feat of human and artistic achievement. When it comes to our Masterpiece Crate series, there is one guiding principle through each of these albums: they are undisputed, stone-cold classics. Nothing can be more true then for this album we have been gifted 50 years ago by one of the most forward-thinking bands of their time, Pink Floyd, with arguably the most successful worldwide album in modern music history, The Dark Side of The Moon.

The Beach Boys - Sail on Sailor - 1972 Boxset drives home the brilliance of this magical and underrated period of Beach Boys history

The Beach Boys - Sail On Sailor - 1972 Boxset Review

Sail on Sailor The Beach Boys Super Deluxe Boxset, AirdriftSignals Music Magazine

Click here to read my tribute to Brian Wilson and about the latest Smile-core album collage project that I completed in honor Brian’s greatest masterpiece, Smile.

We live in a time where the excess of everything in media can feel overwhelming; that there's so much music, film, and entertainment to consume that nothing feels sacred anymore and nearly everything that's made has been touched upon before. The question of deep and soulful music that stands out in the sea of music past and present can be answered with the many greats who have graced our collective culture, however, none of them have had as varied and tumultuous of a career as the brilliant yet personally flawed Beach Boys. Their latest archival boxset of unreleased live and studio recordings focuses on a time when the magic of music made them and changed them for the better.

How to successfully downsize your vinyl player setup without sacrificing audio quality

How To Downsize Your Vinyl Setup

AirdriftSignals downsize your vinyl setup

Being a part of a few vinyl social circles, I have seen a number of posts of newcomer’s setups, which usually include a suitcase record player, and this motivated me to share my own downsized setup and my story of how it came to be. It is awesome to see so many new record lovers’ humble beginnings! Loving and collecting records is really a special thing. When the album artwork (especially if it’s cool art) is that much larger to behold its beauty in your hands while listening to a nice set of speakers or headphones, it makes the music listening experience so much more immersive.

Transatlantic duo Configa and Hastyle unleash The ConfigHas Crates, setting hip-hop ablaze!

Configa Presents: The ConfigHas Crates Review

Configa Presents: The ConfigHas Crates Album Review

Hip-hop has been through many trends over the years. As the founding hip-hop genre has inevitably morphed into subgenres such as east and west coast hip-hop, underground, gangsta rap, conscious rap, crunk, southern rap, trap, mumble rap, etc., the prevailing sound has always been real hip-hop. Old heads remind the younger generations of aspiring artists and avid fans, while newer players help by keeping the style alive. The ConfigHas Crates is no different, as transatlantic duo Configa (beats) and Hastyle (rhymes) prove that no "body" can keep these two talented artists apart for this compilation, exhumed, electrified, and brought back to life.

Earth’s Full Upon Her Burning Lips (2019) is an awesome showcase of doom metal, and probably the ultimate example of metal you can chill to

Earth - Full Upon Her Burning Lips Review

Earth Full Upon Her Burning Lips AirdriftSignals Music Magazine

Earth, a group that helped to define and form the genre of ambient metal, doom, drone, or stoner metal, has had multiple releases since the early 1990s. Taking elements from grunge and other forms of heavy metal music, Earth's founding member Dylan Carlson was notably friends with Kurt Cobain. Earth's origins in Seattle also explain this emerging hub of hard rock music that continues to be a haven of major and independent music to this day. Their latest release was last year's Full Upon Her Burning Lips, and while I am guilty of sleeping on this instrumental album, Earth has remained a personal favorite of mine, as they defined the perfect form of metal that you can relax to. Full Upon Her Burning Lips builds upon their previous releases and makes for an engrossing showcase of strong and steady guitar riffs and atmospheric drums and percussion.

System Of A Down’s first music in 15 years, Protect The Land, and Genocidal Humanoidz, brings to light immediate atrocities committed in their homeland

System Of A Down - Protect The Land / Genocidal Humanoidz Review

System of a Down Protect The Land Genocidal Humanoidz AirdriftSignals Music Magazine

Now is a pivotal time in world history, which should go without saying. Not only are Americans and worldwide citizens bearing witness to a historic election year, but a once-in-a-century worldwide pandemic has rocked the world. If there could be any more unpredictability, it is that ISIS terrorists from Syria, along with the corrupt regimes of Azerbaijan and Turkey have declared war on the independent Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, committing unspeakable crimes against humanity. These atrocities that are being committed have brought out from hiatus System of A Down, who are releasing their first new music in 15 years.

Obsidian Kingdom AirdriftSignals Interview

AirdriftSignals: This third LP, MEAT MACHINE, is the first to feature primary female vocals in your songs, performed by one of your guitarists Irene, and the split vocal duties you bring is a welcome transition between the equally pleasing aggressive and tender moments of the album. Can you speak a little about how you came about deciding your latest lineup change and the addition of this contrast to your new songs?
